Why the 2024 Bluey $1 was made

Bluey is an Australian animated series about a Blue Heeler puppy, her little sister Bingo and their parents, made in Brisbane and first shown in 2018. It became a worldwide hit with children and adults alike, loved for its gentle humor and its very Australian backyard settings. In 2024 the Royal Australian Mint released a set of three colored $1 coins celebrating the show, sold as the Bluey Dollarbucks collection.

The three designs show Bluey herself, the whole Heeler family and the episode in which Bluey and Bingo dress up as two old ladies, the Grannies. The coins were sold by the Royal Australian Mint to collectors and fans rather than issued through the banks in the usual way. They came in collector packaging, both singly and as a set of three. No mintage figure was published in the source for these coins, so it isn't possible to compare them with other dollars on numbers alone. Demand was strong, which shows how popular the show is with families and collectors.

How to recognize it

There are three reverse designs, all colored. The first shows Bluey herself, front and center. The second shows the whole Heeler family together. The third shows Bluey and Bingo dressed as the Grannies. Each design is printed in color on the coin. King Charles III appears on the obverse in Dan Thorne's portrait, dated 2024. The coins use the standard $1 specifications: 25 mm across, 9 g of aluminum bronze with an interrupted milled edge. The colored artwork and the King's portrait make them easy to identify. If you have one in its original card, keep it there.

What to check on your 2024 Bluey $1

  • Confirm the design and date: Bluey dated 2024.
  • Check the shape and size: the $1 is round, 25 mm across, gold-colored and weighs 9 g.
  • Look at the surfaces under a light. Coins from mint rolls or sets have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points.
  • Never clean it. Polishing leaves fine scratches and an unnatural shine that collectors avoid.

No mintage figure was published in the source for these coins, so judge them by condition and completeness. A full set of three in original cards is the most desirable. Loose coins should be checked for scratches or wear in the color, which is easily damaged. Never rub or clean a colored coin. They are legal tender $1 coins, but most were bought as collectibles, so collectors usually keep them in their packaging. Original cards should be kept flat and dry, since bent or stained packaging reduces appeal. The cards and set envelope are part of the product, so keep them together with the coins.
