For scale, the most common is the 2008 Canadian Dime with 467.5 million, about 6 times as many. The scarcest is the 1884 Canadian Dime with 150,000, 515 times fewer than this one.

What to check on your 2024 Canadian Dime
- Try a magnet. Nickel-plated steel is magnetic, so a genuine 2024 coin sticks; a silver one would not.
- Never clean it. Rubbing or polishing leaves fine scratches and an unnatural shine that collectors avoid.
- Look for full luster and no scratches. Modern dimes only interest collectors in uncirculated condition or with a recognized variety.
Charles III dimes (2023 to 2024)
Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022 after seventy years on the throne and her son became Charles III. The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled his Canadian portrait in November 2023. It is the work of the Canadian artist Steven Rosati and shows the king without a crown, with the legend CHARLES III D·G·REX. Coins with the new portrait began reaching circulation around the end of 2023. It is the first change of monarch on the dime since 1953.
Physically nothing changed. The dime is still multi-ply plated steel at 1.75 g and 18 mm, with a reeded edge and the mint's logo sits on the obverse. On the reverse, Emanuel Hahn's Bluenose has now served under three monarchs, from George VI to Charles III. Production was modest by recent standards: 43,205,000 dimes dated 2023 and 77,275,000 dated 2024, both well below the hundreds of millions struck in the 2000s.
These are face value coins, but the change of portrait makes them fun to look for. A dime showing a king rather than a queen is a Charles III coin and the REX in the legend confirms it. Elizabeth II dimes remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the new ones for many years. A bright first year coin from a bank roll is a nice thing to put aside as a souvenir of the new reign.
