Quick answers
- Is the 2016-P Harpers Ferry Quarter rare?
- No. With 435 million made, it's one of the most common America the Beautiful Quarters.
- Is the 2016-P Harpers Ferry Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2016 America the Beautiful Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is P, for Philadelphia.
- How many 2016-P Harpers Ferry Quarter coins were made?
- 434,630,000.
What to check on your 2016-P
- Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2016-D (424 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2016-S Harpers Ferry Quarter Proof (654,516 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
With 435 million made, the 2016-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2016-P Harpers Ferry
Philadelphia made 434,630,000 of the Harpers Ferry coin. That was the biggest Philadelphia run of the 5 designs issued in 2016; Fort Moultrie had the smallest at 154 million.
Denver struck a similar number of the same design (424 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it's one of the most plentiful Philadelphia designs.
How to recognize it
The Harpers Ferry design
West Virginia's Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is the third design of 2016, showing John Brown's Fort, the brick fire engine and guard house of the federal armory. Abolitionist John Brown made his last stand in this building during his October 1859 raid on the armory. The raid deepened the divide between North and South on the eve of the Civil War. The town sits where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet. Thomas Hipschen designed the reverse, which Phebe Hemphill sculpted.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
