What is a 2019-D Delaware: Annie Jump Cannon Innovation Dollar worth?

Collectors pay a real premium for this date, worn or not, because far fewer were made than usual. Uncirculated pieces go much higher.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error
  • Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

What to check on your 2019-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2019-P (866,850 made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2019-S Delaware: Annie Jump Cannon Innovation Dollar Proof (149,885 made) is the one to compare with.
  • Judge the grade under good light. These are sold in rolls, bags and sets, so most survive uncirculated. Value depends on luster and freedom from marks.

The story of the 2019-D Delaware: Annie Jump Cannon

Denver made 866,400 of the Delaware: Annie Jump Cannon innovation dollar. Among the 4 designs of 2019 it was the second largest Denver run, between New Jersey: Lightbulb (559,675) and Pennsylvania: Polio vaccine (886,325).

Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (866,850), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it's one of the most plentiful Denver designs.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2019

The West Point Mint struck quarters with a "W" mint mark for the first time and released them into circulation to encourage people to search their change.

How to recognize it

The Delaware: Annie Jump Cannon design

Astronomer Annie Jump Cannon, born in Dover, Delaware, in 1863, is the subject of this 2019 coin. Working at the Harvard College Observatory, she classified hundreds of thousands of stars by their spectra. Her sequence of spectral classes, O B An F G K M, became the international standard and is still taught today. The reverse shows her silhouette against a night sky filled with stars, with the inscriptions ANNIE JUMP CANNON and CLASSIFYING THE STARS. Donna Weaver designed it and Joseph Menna sculpted it.

The American Innovation Dollar design

The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
