What to check on your 2009-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2009-D (41 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2009-S US Virgin Islands Quarter Proof (2,113,390 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.

With 41 million made, the 2009-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2009-P US Virgin Islands

Philadelphia made 41,000,000 of the US Virgin Islands coin. Among the 6 designs of 2009 it was the second smallest Philadelphia run, between Northern Mariana Islands (35 million) and American Samoa (43 million).

Denver struck a similar number of the same design (41 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2009

Four special reverse designs marked the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth on the cent. Quarters honored the District of Columbia and five US territories. The Native American dollar began a new reverse each year.

How to recognize it

The US Virgin Islands design

An outline of the three main islands, St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas, appears with a tyre palm tree, a yellow breast bird and yellow cedar blossoms. The territorial motto UNITED IN PRIDE AND HOPE runs across the design. The bird and flower are official symbols of the territory. The United States bought the islands from Denmark in 1917. This coin was the fifth quarter of the 2009 District of Columbia and US territories series.

The D.C. and U.S. Territories Quarter design

Six reverse designs in 2009 honored the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. Like the State quarters, the reverse names the jurisdiction and the obverse carries Washington's portrait with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.
