What to check on your 1922-S

  • Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 1922-D (15 million made).
  • Don't clean it. Cleaning leaves fine scratches and an unnatural shine that collectors avoid.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Wear appears first on the hair above Liberty's ear and on the eagle's wing feathers.

Circulated examples are usually traded for their silver content. Pick out the best ones: original luster and attractive toning lift a coin above melt, while cleaned coins lose most of their collector value.

The story of the 1922-S

This was the first time San Francisco made the Peace Silver Dollar for circulation: 17,475,000 coins. The next year it made 19 million (1923-S).

1922-D came to 15 million and 1922 came to 52 million, so neither mint's 1922 coin is much scarcer than the other.

San Francisco struck the Peace Silver Dollar in 9 issues between 1922 and 1935. By mintage this one lands in the more common half, while the key for that mint is the 1927-S (866,000). Within the 1920s it's 16th smallest of 19, between the 1922-D (15 million) and the 1923-S (19 million).

High relief and the switch to low relief (1921 to 1922)

Anthony de Francisci's Peace dollar commemorated the end of World War I. The first 1,006,473 were struck in late December 1921 in high relief and released in January 1922. The reverse eagle perches on a rock inscribed PEACE as the sun rises behind it. A broken sword in the original design was removed before release after objections that it suggested defeat.

The high relief strained the presses and wore dies quickly, so early in 1922 the Mint lowered the relief. Philadelphia then struck 51.7 million low relief dollars in 1922, joined by Denver and San Francisco, making 1922 the most common Peace dollar. A few 1922 high relief coins exist as rarities. The 1921 itself is scarce and often shows a weak strike in the center of Liberty's hair.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 1922

Only Denver struck Lincoln cents in 1922. Worn and filled dies at Denver produced cents with a missing mint mark, now known as the 1922 "No D" or "Plain" cent.

How to recognize it

Anthony de Francisci's Liberty faces left wearing a crown of light rays, with LIBERTY above and the date below. The reverse shows an eagle at rest on a mountaintop, holding an olive branch, as the sun rises behind it, with the word PEACE on the rock. The mint mark is below the word ONE, near the tip of the eagle's wing.
