What is a 2015-D Harry S. Truman Presidential Dollar worth?

Collectors pay a real premium for this date, worn or not, because far fewer were made than usual. Uncirculated pieces go much higher.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error
  • Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

For market prices, check recent sold results for certified coins in the same grade.

Quick answers

Is the 2015-D Harry S. Truman Presidential Dollar rare?
Somewhat. 3,500,000 were made, fewer than most dates, so collectors treat it as a semi-key.
Is the 2015-D Harry S. Truman Presidential Dollar silver?
No. It's manganese brass (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel). Circulating silver dollars ended with the 1935 Peace dollar. Some Eisenhower dollars with an S mint mark were made in 40% silver for collectors, but circulation Ike dollars are copper-nickel clad.
Where is the mint mark on a 2015 Presidential Dollar?
On the edge, incused along with the date and mottos. On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
How many 2015-D Harry S. Truman Presidential Dollar coins were made?
3,500,000.

What to check on your 2015-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2015-P (4.9 million made).
  • Judge the grade under good light. Check the high points of each portrait and the edge lettering, which should be complete and evenly spaced.

The story of the 2015-D Harry S. Truman

Denver made 3,500,000 of the Harry S. Truman presidential dollar. That was the smallest Denver run of the 4 designs issued in 2015, so it's the one from that year you're least likely to find in change.

Philadelphia struck more of the same design, 4.9 million, so the 2015-D is the scarcer of the pair by about 29 percent.

Across the whole program it's one of the Denver designs made in the smallest numbers, 5th from the bottom of 40.

Made only for collectors (2012 to 2016)

From 2012 the program continued for collectors only. The Mint struck the remaining presidents in small numbers and sold them in rolls, bags and sets, so these dates are seldom found in change and their mintages are a fraction of the early years.

The original program ended in 2016 with Ronald Reagan. Uncirculated coins from original rolls are the usual way to fill these years in a set and edge lettering errors from this period are much rarer than the early ones.

How to recognize it

The Harry S. Truman design

Harry S. Truman of Missouri became the 33rd president on the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in April 1945 and served until 1953. He authorized the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. His administration launched the Marshall Plan for European recovery and joined NATO in 1949. In 1948 he ordered the desegregation of the armed forces. He sent American troops to Korea in 1950.

The Presidential Dollar design

The obverse shows a president with his name and the order and years of his time in office. The reverse shows the Statue of Liberty with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and $1. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, along with IN GOD WE TRUST on coins struck before 2009, so check the edge for the mint mark.
