What is a 2001-D North Carolina Quarter worth?

In circulated condition it's worth face value. Only uncirculated coins with full original luster, or a recognized variety, carry a premium.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error

For market prices, check recent sold results for certified coins in the same grade.

What to check on your 2001-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2001-P (628 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2001-S North Carolina Quarter Proof (3,094,140 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.

With 428 million made, the 2001-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2001-D North Carolina

Denver made 427,876,000 of the North Carolina quarter. Among the 5 designs of 2001 it was the second smallest Denver run, between Kentucky (371 million) and Rhode Island (447 million).

Philadelphia struck more of the same design, 628 million, so the 2001-D is the scarcer of the pair by about 32 percent.

Across the whole program it sits 40th of 50 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Oklahoma at 195 million.

How to recognize it

The North Carolina design

Taken from a famous photograph of the event, this reverse shows the Wright Flyer lifting off with Orville Wright at the controls as Wilbur runs alongside. The words FIRST FLIGHT appear above the scene. The Wright brothers made the first powered, controlled airplane flight near Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903, choosing the Outer Banks for its steady winds and soft sand. North Carolina ratified the Constitution in 1789. Its quarter was the second release of 2001.

The 50 State Quarter design

To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
