What to check on your 2021-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2021-D (865 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2021-S Washington Crossing the Delaware Quarter Proof (512,798 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Graded mainly on luster, strike and surface marks.

With 838 million made, the 2021-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2021-P

2021 was the first year of the Washington Crossing the Delaware Quarter. Philadelphia struck 838,400,000 of them. It was also the last year of the series.

2021-D came to 865 million, so neither mint's 2021 coin is much scarcer than the other.

A one-year reverse between two programs (2021)

When the America the Beautiful series ended, the Mint used a single new reverse for the rest of 2021: General George Washington crossing the Delaware River on the night of December 25, 1776, before his surprise attack on Hessian troops at Trenton. The design by Benjamin Sowards shows Washington standing in the boat as it pushes through the ice, with the words CROSSING THE DELAWARE.

The reverse was used for just one year. In 2022 the American Women quarters began, paired with Laura Gardin Fraser's portrait of Washington on the obverse. Philadelphia and Denver struck the circulation coins, so these quarters are easy to find in change and collectors look mainly for uncirculated examples with full, unmarked surfaces.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2021

The America the Beautiful quarter program ended and a new reverse showing General Washington crossing the Delaware took its place. Morgan and Peace dollars were struck again for their centennial.

How to recognize it

The 2021 reverse by Benjamin Sowards shows General Washington crossing the Delaware River before the Battle of Trenton, with the words CROSSING THE DELAWARE. The obverse kept Washington's portrait.
