Why the 2015 Battle of Britain 50p was made

Between July and October 1940 the Royal Air Force fought the Luftwaffe in the skies over southern England, the first major campaign decided entirely in the air. The RAF's success forced Germany to put off its planned invasion of Britain. Winston Churchill's tribute to the aircrew, 'Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few', gave them their lasting name: The Few. Around 3,000 aircrew flew with Fighter Command during the battle, drawn from Britain and many other nations including Poland, Czechoslovakia, Canada and New Zealand.

The Royal Mint marked the 75th anniversary in 2015 with a 50p designed by the lettering artist Gary Breeze. A total of 5,900,000 were struck for circulation. The coin stands out for two reasons. It shows no denomination anywhere, so neither side tells you it is a 50p. And the circulation coins carry Jody Clark's portrait of the Queen, the fifth effigy of her reign, which first appeared on coins in 2015. That makes it one of the earliest commemorative 50ps with the new portrait and an easy coin to start a conversation with.

How to recognize it

Pilots run across an airfield toward their planes on the reverse, while fighters fly overhead, the scene of a squadron being scrambled. The name of the battle and the year 1940 are lettered into the design. What you won't find is the value: there's no 50 PENCE or FIFTY PENCE on either side, which is the surest way to identify it. The figures are small, so a magnifier helps if you want to see the pilots clearly on a worn coin. The obverse shows Jody Clark's portrait of the Queen. The coin is 27.3 mm across with a plain edge. Gary Breeze, best known for his lettering and letter carving, designed it.

The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.

2015 Battle of Britain 50p by the numbers

Measured by how many were made, the 2015 Battle of Britain 50p ranks 48th lowest of 76 circulating 50p coins with a published mintage. The next scarcer is the 2013 Benjamin Britten 50p (5.3 million); the next more common is the 2018 Paddington at the Palace 50p (5.9 million).

For scale, the most common is the 1973 EEC Hands 50p with 89.8 million, about 15 times as many. The scarcest is the 1992 Single Market 50p with 109,000, 54 times fewer than this one.

It was the only circulating commemorative 50p dated 2015. The regular Royal Shield reverse accounted for another 20.1 million that year.

What to check on your 2015 Battle of Britain 50p

  • Confirm the design. The reverse should match the Battle of Britain described above and carry the date 2015; similar designs from other years are a common mix-up.
  • Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
  • Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
  • Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.

With 5.9 million made for circulation, the Battle of Britain coin is not scarce and circulated pieces sit at face value. Its subject gives it wide appeal and the missing denomination makes it a talking point. Check the aircraft in the sky and the small running figures, which lose detail first. A coin kept from new has a bright field around the planes; one from change is usually scuffed across the lettering. Any example with the airfield scene still crisp is worth keeping.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no value on the Battle of Britain 50p?

The design leaves out the denomination entirely, so neither side says 50 PENCE. It is still a legal tender 50p, recognizable by its seven-sided shape and size. The space went to the scene of pilots scrambling to their aircraft.

How many Battle of Britain 50p coins were minted?

The Royal Mint struck 5,900,000 for circulation in 2015. That's a mid-range figure for a commemorative 50p, so the coin is easy to find, though its unusual lack of a denomination makes it a favorite with collectors.
