Quick answers

Is the 2010-D Mount Hood Quarter rare?
Not by date: 34 million were struck. A sharp uncirculated coin or a known variety is what makes one special.
Is the 2010-D Mount Hood Quarter silver?
No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
Where is the mint mark on a 2010 America the Beautiful Quarter?
On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
How many 2010-D Mount Hood Quarter coins were made?
34,400,000.

What to check on your 2010-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2010-P (34 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2010-S Mount Hood Quarter Proof (1,397,101 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.

With 34 million made, the 2010-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2010-D Mount Hood

Denver made 34,400,000 of the Mount Hood coin. Among the 5 designs of 2010 it was the second smallest Denver run, between Hot Springs (34 million) and Yellowstone (35 million).

Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (34 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it sits 9th of 56 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Acadia at 22 million.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2010

The Union Shield reverse replaced the Lincoln Memorial on the cent. The America the Beautiful quarters began, honoring a national park or site in every state and territory.

How to recognize it

The Mount Hood design

Closing out 2010, the Mount Hood National Forest quarter represents Oregon. The reverse shows the snowcapped peak of Mount Hood rising in the distance with Lost Lake in the foreground. Mount Hood is the highest point in Oregon, a volcano in the Cascade Range whose slopes hold glaciers, old forests and the routes of early pioneer travel. Federal protection of the surrounding forest dates to the 1890s. Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse.

The America the Beautiful Quarter design

Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
