What is a 2017-D Ellis Island Quarter worth?
A worn 2017-D Ellis Island is a spender: face value. A bright uncirculated one, or one with a known error, is worth setting aside.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error

Quick answers
- Is the 2017-D Ellis Island Quarter rare?
- No. With 254 million made, it's one of the most common America the Beautiful Quarters.
- Is the 2017-D Ellis Island Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2017 America the Beautiful Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2017-D Ellis Island Quarter coins were made?
- 254,000,000.
What to check on your 2017-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2017-P (234 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2017-S Ellis Island Quarter Proof (629,997 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
With 254 million made, the 2017-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2017-D Ellis Island
Denver made 254,000,000 of the Ellis Island coin. That was the biggest Denver run of the 5 designs issued in 2017; George Rogers Clark had the smallest at 181 million.
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (234 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 49th of 56 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Acadia at 22 million.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2017
Philadelphia cents carried a "P" mint mark for the first time, marking the 225th anniversary of the US Mint.
How to recognize it
The Ellis Island design
Ellis Island, part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, is represented by New Jersey on the fourth 2017 quarter. The reverse shows an immigrant family approaching the island with a mixture of hope and uncertainty, with the hospital building in the background. From 1892 to 1954 the station processed more than 12 million immigrants. Most of the island's present land lies within New Jersey. Barbara Fox designed the reverse and Phebe Hemphill sculpted it.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
