What is a 2017-P Frederick Douglass Quarter worth?
A worn 2017-P Frederick Douglass is a spender: face value. A bright uncirculated one, or one with a known error, is worth setting aside.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error

Quick answers
- Is the 2017-P Frederick Douglass Quarter rare?
- No. 185 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
- Is the 2017-P Frederick Douglass Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2017 America the Beautiful Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is P, for Philadelphia.
- How many 2017-P Frederick Douglass Quarter coins were made?
- 184,800,000.
What to check on your 2017-P
- Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2017-D (186 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2017-S Frederick Douglass Quarter Proof (629,997 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
With 185 million made, the 2017-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2017-P Frederick Douglass
Philadelphia made 184,800,000 of the Frederick Douglass coin. That was the smallest Philadelphia run of the 5 designs issued in 2017, so it's the one from that year you're least likely to find in change.
Denver struck a similar number of the same design (186 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 35th of 56 Philadelphia designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Chaco Culture at 22 million.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2017
Philadelphia cents carried a "P" mint mark for the first time, marking the 225th anniversary of the US Mint.
How to recognize it
The Frederick Douglass design
The District of Columbia's quarter, second in 2017, honors the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. Douglass is shown seated at a writing desk with his hilltop home, Cedar Hill, in the background. After escaping slavery, Douglass became one of the most influential abolitionists, writers and orators of the nineteenth century. He bought Cedar Hill, in the Anacostia neighborhood, in 1877 and lived there until his death in 1895. Thomas Hipschen designed the reverse and Phebe Hemphill sculpted it.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
