What is a 2022-P Tennessee: Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Innovation Dollar worth?

It's scarcer than a typical date, so even circulated examples sell above face. The best uncirculated coins are where the money is.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error
  • Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

What to check on your 2022-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2022-D (453,850 made).
  • Check the date and mint mark under magnification for tooling or added letters. Scarce dates are the ones forgers alter.
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2022-S Tennessee: Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Innovation Dollar Proof (86,195 made) is the one to compare with.
  • Judge the grade under good light. These are sold in rolls, bags and sets, so most survive uncirculated. Value depends on luster and freedom from marks.

Low-mintage dates attract altered and counterfeit coins. Check that the mint mark and date have not been tooled or added, or buy one already certified by PCGS or NGC.

The story of the 2022-P Tennessee: Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)

Philadelphia made 453,425 of the Tennessee: Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) innovation dollar. Among the 4 designs of 2022 it was the second smallest Philadelphia run, between Kentucky: Kentucky bluegrass (451,900) and Rhode Island: Reliance yacht (454,150).

Denver struck a similar number of the same design (453,850), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it sits 8th of 29 Philadelphia designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Mississippi: First human lung transplant at 399,275.

More on the 2022-P

Philadelphia's run of 453,425 Tennessee coins came in slightly below Denver's 453,850 for the same design. That's unusual: Tennessee and Kentucky were the only 2022 designs where Denver struck more than Philadelphia. The margin is tiny, though, so both versions are equally available; the P mint mark on the edge is the only thing that sets this one apart.

The Tennessee Valley Authority was created in 1933 during the first months of Franklin Roosevelt's presidency. Its dams brought power to a region that had largely gone without. The coin tells that story through one farm rather than a dam, which gives it a quiet, rural look unlike most Innovation designs. Tennessee's other modern state coin, the 2002 quarter, celebrates the state's music, so the two make a nice pair. The thin power lines on this reverse can look faint on a softly struck Philadelphia coin; that's a strike issue, not damage. Value is face value or a small premium.

How to recognize it

The Tennessee: Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) design

Tennessee's 2022 dollar recognizes the Tennessee Valley Authority, created by Congress in 1933 as part of the New Deal. The agency built dams on the Tennessee River system to control floods, improve navigation and generate hydroelectric power. Its work brought electricity to many rural farms and towns for the first time. The reverse shows a Tennessee farm with a barn and silo, as newly installed power lines run along a country road. Inscriptions read TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY and TENNESSEE.

The American Innovation Dollar design

The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
