How to recognize it
The Rhode Island: Reliance yacht design
The Reliance, a racing yacht designed by Nathanael Herreshoff, appears on Rhode Island's 2022 dollar. Built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, it successfully defended the America's Cup in 1903 against Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock III. Its light construction and vast sail area made it a showcase of the era's nautical engineering. The reverse shows the yacht racing under full sail, framed by a rope border, with the inscription RHODE ISLAND. Dennis Friel designed it and Phebe Hemphill sculpted it.
The American Innovation Dollar design
The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
