How to recognize it
The Indiana: Automobile industry design
Indiana's coin celebrates the state's automobile industry, from early carmaking to racing. Elwood Haynes of Kokomo tested one of the earliest American gasoline automobiles in 1894. Studebaker and other Indiana firms later built cars in large numbers, while the Indianapolis 500 has drawn racers since 1911. The reverse stacks three vehicles: an early gas automobile at the top, a classic production car in the middle and a modern Indy-style race car at the bottom. Ron Sanders designed it and Phebe Hemphill sculpted it.
The American Innovation Dollar design
The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
