How to recognize it
The Mississippi: First human lung transplant design
Mississippi's 2023 dollar marks the first human lung transplant, performed in 1963 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Dr. James D. Hardy led the surgical team. Although the patient survived only a short time afterward, the operation showed that lung transplantation was possible and opened the way for later advances. The reverse shows a pair of human lungs behind a surgical assistant passing forceps to the surgeon. It carries the inscription FIRST HUMAN LUNG TRANSPLANT.
The American Innovation Dollar design
The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
