What is a 2024-D Alabama: Saturn V Rocket Innovation Dollar worth?
It's scarcer than a typical date, so even circulated examples sell above face. The best uncirculated coins are where the money is.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error
- Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

What to check on your 2024-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2024-P (524,750 made).
- Check the date and mint mark under magnification for tooling or added letters. Scarce dates are the ones forgers alter.
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2024-S Alabama: Saturn V Rocket Innovation Dollar Proof (66,047 made) is the one to compare with.
- Judge the grade under good light. These are sold in rolls, bags and sets, so most survive uncirculated. Value depends on luster and freedom from marks.
Low-mintage dates attract altered and counterfeit coins. Check that the mint mark and date have not been tooled or added, or buy one already certified by PCGS or NGC.
The story of the 2024-D Alabama: Saturn V Rocket
Denver made 481,075 of the Alabama: Saturn V Rocket innovation dollar. That was the biggest Denver run of the 4 designs issued in 2024; Maine: DC Defibrillator had the smallest at 421,000.
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (524,750), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 22nd of 29 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Georgia: Trustees' Garden at 368,475.
More on the 2024-D
Denver made 481,075 Alabama Saturn V dollars, the biggest Denver run of 2024 but about 43,700 behind Philadelphia's 524,750, which was the largest Innovation dollar of the year. The 2024 Denver coins varied more than usual, from this Alabama down to 421,000 for Maine, so the D mint mark matters more on some 2024 designs than on others.
Alabama was admitted in 1819 as the twenty-second state, which placed its coin second in the 2024 order after Illinois. Huntsville still displays a Saturn V at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, a reminder of the rocket's sheer size at 363 feet tall. Collectors who like pairing a state's coins can set this dollar beside the 2003 Alabama quarter, which shows Helen Keller. On the coin, the tall, narrow rocket body is the highest point, so check it for scrapes. The plume of exhaust below it is the next place to look. A lustrous Denver example is worth face value or a small premium.
How to recognize it
The Alabama: Saturn V Rocket design
The Saturn V rocket, developed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, is the subject of Alabama's 2024 coin. Engineers there, led by Wernher von Braun, designed the rocket to send Apollo astronauts to the Moon. Saturn V launched the Apollo 11 crew in 1969 and later lifted the Skylab space station into orbit in 1973. The reverse shows the rocket lifting off with the Moon in the background, inscribed SATURN V and ALABAMA. Craig A. Campbell designed and sculpted it.
The American Innovation Dollar design
The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
