What is a 2024-P Maine: DC Defibrillator Innovation Dollar worth?

Collectors pay a real premium for this date, worn or not, because far fewer were made than usual. Uncirculated pieces go much higher.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error
  • Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

What to check on your 2024-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2024-D (421,000 made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2024-S Maine: DC Defibrillator Innovation Dollar Proof (66,047 made) is the one to compare with.
  • Judge the grade under good light. These are sold in rolls, bags and sets, so most survive uncirculated. Value depends on luster and freedom from marks.

The story of the 2024-P Maine: DC Defibrillator

Philadelphia made 512,025 of the Maine: DC Defibrillator innovation dollar. Among the 4 designs of 2024 it was the second smallest Philadelphia run, between Illinois: Steel Plow (498,675) and Missouri: George Washington Carver (524,325).

Denver struck a similar number of the same design (421,000), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it sits 19th of 29 Philadelphia designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Mississippi: First human lung transplant at 399,275.

How to recognize it

The Maine: DC Defibrillator design

Maine's 2024 dollar honors the direct current defibrillator developed by cardiologist Dr. Bernard Lown in the early 1960s. Born in Lithuania, Lown immigrated with his family to Lewiston, Maine, where he grew up before graduating from the University of Maine. His DC device restored normal heart rhythm more safely and reliably than earlier alternating current methods. The reverse shows Lown in profile above his defibrillator in operation, with the inscriptions BERNARD LOWN, M.D. and DIRECT CURRENT DEFIBRILLATOR. Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted it.

The American Innovation Dollar design

The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile with IN GOD WE TRUST and $1. Each reverse honors an innovation or innovator from one state or territory, issued in the order the states joined the Union. The date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM are lettered on the edge, which is where to look for the mint mark.
