Quick answers
- Is the 2016-P Roosevelt Dime rare?
- No. With 1.5 billion made, it's one of the most common Roosevelt Dimes.
- Is the 2016-P Roosevelt Dime silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Dimes dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2016 Roosevelt Dime?
- On the obverse, just above the date. "P" appears from 1980. On this coin the mark is P, for Philadelphia.
- Which Philadelphia dates near 2016 are scarcer?
- The 2011-P at 748,000,000, the 2012-P at 808,000,000, the 2013-P at 1,086,500,000, plus 7 more. So the 2016-P is one of the easier dates of its stretch.
- How many 2016-P Roosevelt Dime coins were made?
- 1,517,000,000.
What to check on your 2016-P
- Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2016-D (1.4 billion made).
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Check the horizontal bands on the torch on the reverse. "Full Bands" (FB) coins, where the bands are complete and separated, carry big premiums. On the obverse look at Roosevelt's hair above the ear.
With 1.5 billion made, the 2016-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2016-P
At 1,517,000,000, the 2016 run at Philadelphia was close to the 2015 figure. The next year it made 1.4 billion (2017-P).
2016-D came to 1.4 billion, so neither mint's 2016 coin is much scarcer than the other.
Philadelphia struck the Roosevelt Dime in 80 issues between 1946 and 2025. By mintage this one lands in the more common half, while the key for that mint is the 1955 (12,450,181). Within the 2010s it's 19th smallest of 20, between the 2015-P (1.5 billion) and the 2015-D (1.5 billion).
Recession lows and anniversary specials (2009 to 2025)
The recession of 2009 cut demand sharply. The Mint struck only about 96.5 million dimes at Philadelphia and 49.5 million at Denver, the lowest combined total since 1955. Output recovered quickly. In 2015 a March of Dimes set paired a silver proof dime from West Point with a silver reverse proof dime from Philadelphia. A 2017-S enhanced uncirculated dime followed in a set marking the Mint's 225th anniversary.
Silver proof dimes changed from 90 percent to .999 fine silver in 2019. Circulation mintages stayed above one billion per mint every year from 2013 through 2023, then dropped in 2024 to about 307 million at Philadelphia and 248 million at Denver. Output in 2025 stayed well below the earlier peaks. Low mintage West Point and San Francisco specials are the scarce coins of this era, while off-center strikes and clipped planchets are the usual finds in modern rolls.
How to recognize it
Franklin Roosevelt faces left with LIBERTY in front of him, IN GOD WE TRUST below his chin and the date at the lower right. The designer's initials JS sit below the neck. The reverse shows a torch flanked by an olive branch and an oak branch, with E PLURIBUS UNUM across the field. The mint mark was to the left of the torch base until 1964 and has been above the date since 1968.
