What is a 2019-P American Indians in Space Native American Dollar worth?

It's scarcer than a typical date, so even circulated examples sell above face. The best uncirculated coins are where the money is.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error
  • Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

For market prices, check recent sold results for certified coins in the same grade.

Quick answers

Is the 2019-P American Indians in Space Native American Dollar rare?
Somewhat. 1,400,000 were made, fewer than most dates, so collectors treat it as a semi-key.
Is the 2019-P American Indians in Space Native American Dollar silver?
No. It's manganese brass (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel). Circulating silver dollars ended with the 1935 Peace dollar. Some Eisenhower dollars with an S mint mark were made in 40% silver for collectors, but circulation Ike dollars are copper-nickel clad.
Where is the mint mark on a 2019 Sacagawea Dollar?
On the edge, incused with the date. On this coin the mark is P, for Philadelphia.
How many 2019-P American Indians in Space Native American Dollar coins were made?
1,400,000.

What to check on your 2019-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2019-D (1.5 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2019-S American Indians in Space Native American Dollar Proof (1,012,931 made) is the one to compare with.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Golden dollars tarnish easily, so bright original color matters. Check Sacagawea's cheek and the eagle's feathers for wear.

The story of the 2019-P American Indians in Space

Philadelphia made 1,400,000 of the American Indians in Space native american dollar.

Denver struck a similar number of the same design (1.5 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it's one of the Philadelphia designs made in the smallest numbers, 4th from the bottom of 23.

Code talkers to Ely Parker (2016 to 2022)

The later designs turned to individual people and modern service: the Code Talkers in 2016, Sequoyah in 2017, Jim Thorpe in 2018, Native Americans in space in 2019, Elizabeth Peratrovich in 2020, Native American military service in 2021 and Ely S. Parker in 2022. Each coin page here explains its own design.

Mintages in these years were small by circulating standards and most coins went to collectors or to banks that ordered them, so you will rarely see one in change. Look for coins straight from mint rolls: the golden surface marks and tarnishes easily and a clean, bright coin is what collectors look for.

Elsewhere in US coinage in 2019

The West Point Mint struck quarters with a "W" mint mark for the first time and released them into circulation to encourage people to search their change.

How to recognize it

The American Indians in Space design

Mary Golda Ross is shown writing calculations on the 2019 reverse. Behind her an Atlas-Agena rocket launches, with an equation inscribed in its cloud. Above, an astronaut on a spacewalk represents Native American astronauts against a field of stars. Ross, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, worked as an engineer at Lockheed on spacecraft and missile projects. Chickasaw astronaut John Herrington flew on the space shuttle in 2002 and performed spacewalks at the International Space Station.

The Sacagawea Dollar design

Glenna Goodacre's obverse shows Sacagawea looking over her shoulder while carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. From 2000 to 2008 the reverse showed a soaring eagle by Thomas Rogers. From 2009 each year has a new reverse on a Native American theme and the date and mint mark moved to the edge. The golden color comes from a manganese brass outer layer.
