What is a 2022-P Ely S. Parker Native American Dollar worth?

It's scarcer than a typical date, so even circulated examples sell above face. The best uncirculated coins are where the money is.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error
  • Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

What to check on your 2022-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2022-D (980,000 made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2022-S Ely S. Parker Native American Dollar Proof (399,950 made) is the one to compare with.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Golden dollars tarnish easily, so bright original color matters. Check Sacagawea's cheek and the eagle's feathers for wear.

The story of the 2022-P Ely S. Parker

Philadelphia made 980,000 of the Ely S. Parker native american dollar.

Denver struck a similar number of the same design (980,000), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across every Philadelphia coin in the program, no design had a smaller run.

Code talkers to Ely Parker (2016 to 2022)

The later designs turned to individual people and modern service: the Code Talkers in 2016, Sequoyah in 2017, Jim Thorpe in 2018, Native Americans in space in 2019, Elizabeth Peratrovich in 2020, Native American military service in 2021 and Ely S. Parker in 2022. Each coin page here explains its own design.

Mintages in these years were small by circulating standards and most coins went to collectors or to banks that ordered them, so you will rarely see one in change. Look for coins straight from mint rolls: the golden surface marks and tarnishes easily and a clean, bright coin is what collectors look for.

The American Women quarters program began, alongside a new obverse portrait of Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser.

How to recognize it

The Ely S. Parker design

The 2022 reverse depicts Ely S. Parker in Army uniform, with a quill pen, a book and a likeness of his signature. Inscriptions read TONAWANDA SENECA and HA-SA-NO-AN-DA, his tribe and the name given to him at birth. Parker served as military secretary to Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. He wrote out the final copy of the surrender terms at Appomattox in 1865. Under President Grant he became the first Native American Commissioner of Indian Affairs.

The Sacagawea Dollar design

Glenna Goodacre's obverse shows Sacagawea looking over her shoulder while carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste. From 2000 to 2008 the reverse showed a soaring eagle by Thomas Rogers. From 2009 each year has a new reverse on a Native American theme and the date and mint mark moved to the edge. The golden color comes from a manganese brass outer layer.
