What to check on your 2004-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2004-P (240 million made).
- Look for the 2004-D Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarter (it's on Denver coins, not this one).
- Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.
Proofs from 2004 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.

How to recognize it
The Florida design
A Spanish galleon and a space shuttle sit on either side of this design, linked by a strip of land with sabal palm trees and the words GATEWAY TO DISCOVERY. The galleon recalls the Spanish explorers who reached Florida in the 1500s. The shuttle represents the launches from Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. Florida became the twenty-seventh state in 1845, the year shown on the coin. Its quarter was the second release of 2004.
The 50 State Quarter design
To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
