What to check on your 2004-S
- Make sure the mint mark really is an S. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2004-D (226 million made).
- Look for the 2004-D Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarter (it's on Denver coins, not this one).
- Judge the grade under good light. State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.
Proofs from 2004 come with and without frosted devices. Coins with strong contrast are labeled Cameo or Deep Cameo and are worth more.
The story of the 2004-S Michigan
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2004
The Westward Journey nickels began, marking the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition.
How to recognize it
The Michigan design
An outline of the state appears within the surrounding Great Lakes system, with the nickname GREAT LAKES STATE. Michigan borders four of the five Great Lakes and is made up of two large peninsulas joined by the Mackinac Bridge. No other state has a longer freshwater shoreline. Michigan became the twenty-sixth state in 1837, the year on the coin. It was the first State quarter released in 2004.
The 50 State Quarter design
To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.
