What is a 2022 Dame Vera Lynn £2 worth?
This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 2 pounds; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with crisp edge lettering
- Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
- A genuine mint error such as a misaligned or wrong edge, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2022 Dame Vera Lynn £2 was made
Dame Vera Lynn was born in East Ham in 1917 and became known as the Forces' Sweetheart during the Second World War. Her songs, especially We'll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover, became the sound of the war years at home. She also traveled to perform for troops as far away as Burma. In 2009, in her nineties, she became the oldest living artist to top the UK album chart. When Queen Elizabeth II addressed the nation in April 2020, her closing words echoed the famous song: "we will meet again". Vera Lynn died that June at the age of 103. The Royal Mint honored her life and legacy with this two-pound coin in 2022.
The Vera Lynn £2 is a collector coin, never issued through banks. It was sold as a brilliant uncirculated coin and in the 2022 annual sets. If one comes your way in change, someone took it out of its pack and spent it. It keeps its full legal tender status and can be used for two pounds just like a standard £2.
How to recognize it
The reverse shows a portrait of Vera Lynn, with DAME VERA LYNN 1917 - 2020 inscribed to the left. The design is credited to the Royal Mint Engraving Team, the Royal Mint's in-house designers. The edge reads WE'LL MEET AGAIN, the title of her best known song. The 2022 coin carries the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Her name and life dates are right there on the reverse, so this one is easy to confirm. Check the edge as well, since a mismatched or blank edge points to a copy or an unofficial medal, however convincing the portrait looks.
The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.
2022 Dame Vera Lynn £2 by the numbers
No circulation mintage exists for the 2022 Dame Vera Lynn £2 because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only £2 coins dated 2022 were Alexander Graham Bell, FA Cup and 25 Years of the £2.
No commemorative £2 dated 2022 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.
What to check on your 2022 Dame Vera Lynn £2
- Read the edge. It should say WE'LL MEET AGAIN. A wrong or missing edge inscription is the quickest sign of a counterfeit.
- Check the two metals: a silver-colored center and a gold-colored ring, with the ring tight and level all the way around.
- Weigh it: a genuine two-metal £2 weighs 12.0 g. Fakes are often a little light and softer in detail.
- Compare the portrait and lettering with a known genuine coin. Blurry letters, a flat portrait or uneven spacing point to a copy.
There's no circulation mintage, so a spent Vera Lynn £2 is uncommon in change. Interest is high among Second World War collectors and among people who simply remember her. A bright pack coin attracts a collector premium, while one with wear across her face and hair usually brings a small premium. A genuine coin has the standard bimetallic build: a nickel-brass outer ring with a cupronickel center, the two parts fitting so tightly that you can't feel the join with a fingernail.

Frequently asked questions
What does the edge of the Vera Lynn £2 say?
