Why the 2022 BBC Centenary 50p was made
The British Broadcasting Company was formed in October 1922 and began daily radio broadcasts from London that November. John Reith, its first general manager, set out the mission of informing, educating and entertaining the public. In 1927 the company became the British Broadcasting Corporation under a Royal Charter. It went on to pioneer television and grow into one of the best known broadcasters in the world, with radio, television and later online services reaching homes across Britain and beyond.
The Royal Mint marked the BBC's centenary with this 50p in 2022. It was sold only as a brilliant uncirculated coin in packs and not released into circulation. If one turns up in your change, it came from a pack and was spent. It is legal tender at 50p, but because none were sent to banks, the chance of finding one this way is small. That makes it one of the less familiar 50ps of its year, even though the BBC itself is a household name. Its wording makes it one of the easier modern 50ps to identify at a glance, even on a worn coin.
How to recognize it
Henry Gray designed the reverse, which shows a globe with transmission arcs above it, along with the words "100 YEARS OF OUR BBC" and "INFORM EDUCATE ENTERTAIN". The arcs suggest broadcast signals spreading around the world. Note the word OUR in the inscription, which is easy to miss at a glance. Tilt the coin and the arcs catch the light first. The obverse carries the monarch's portrait and the 2022 date. No other 50p carries the BBC's motto, so identification is easy. It is struck on the normal seven-sided cupronickel blank with a plain edge, 27.3 millimeters across and 8 grams in weight. The inscriptions are the clearest way to confirm the design.

No circulation mintage exists for the 2022 BBC Centenary 50p because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only 50p coins dated 2022 were Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Winnie the Pooh: Eeyore and Winnie the Pooh: Kanga and Roo.

- Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
- Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
- Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.
