What is a 2022 Winnie the Pooh: Kanga and Roo 50p worth?
This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 50 pence; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with no scratches or contact marks
- Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
- A genuine mint error, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2022 Winnie the Pooh: Kanga and Roo 50p was made
Kanga and her son Roo arrive in the Hundred Acre Wood partway through A. A. Milne's 1926 book Winnie-the-Pooh. Their arrival alarms Rabbit, who hatches a plot to kidnap Roo and swap him with Piglet in Kanga's pouch. The plan fails. Kanga plays along, treats Piglet as if he were Roo and gives him a bath. Kanga is kind and practical, while Roo is small and eager to join in everything. The pair soon become part of the group.
The Royal Mint gave Kanga and Roo their own 50p in 2022 as one of its 2022 Winnie the Pooh coins. It was sold only as a brilliant uncirculated coin in packs and never released into circulation. A Kanga and Roo 50p in your change came from a pack that was opened and spent. It is legal tender at 50p, but these coins reach tills only in small numbers, so the chance of finding one is low. If you do, it is worth keeping, as it belongs to a set many families collected one coin at a time.
How to recognize it
The reverse shows Kanga with her joey Roo, who sits in a high chair, with the words KANGA & ROO. Like the rest of the Pooh coins it is credited to Disney and drawn from E. H. Shepard's original illustrations for Milne's books. The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the 2022 date are on the obverse. No other coin in the series gives the pair a design of their own, so the two of them together settle it. It is struck on the normal seven-sided cupronickel blank with a plain edge and is 27.3 millimeters across.
The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.
2022 Winnie the Pooh: Kanga and Roo 50p by the numbers
No circulation mintage exists for the 2022 Winnie the Pooh: Kanga and Roo 50p because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only 50p coins dated 2022 were Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Winnie the Pooh: Eeyore and BBC Centenary.
For comparison, the 50p coins that did reach change in 2022 were the Platinum Jubilee (5 million), the Pride (5 million) and the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial (9.6 million).
What to check on your 2022 Winnie the Pooh: Kanga and Roo 50p
- Confirm the design. The reverse should match the Winnie the Pooh: Kanga and Roo described above and carry the date 2022; similar designs from other years are a common mix-up.
- Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
- Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
- Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.
Kanga and Roo is one of the single-character coins in the Pooh series, so collectors building the full set need it. With no circulation mintage, a loose example has always started in a pack. A sealed pack draws a collector premium. A coin from change usually shows wear on Kanga's head and on Roo, leaving it at face value or a small premium. Roo's small figure is the best place to check condition: sharp on a pack coin, blurred on one that has been handled. Scratches across the background are another clue.
