Identifying and grading State quarters

State quarters are judged mainly on luster and contact marks. Look for die varieties and errors, which carry the real premiums in this series.

To make room for each state design, the obverse was rearranged: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR all moved to the side with Washington's portrait. The reverse shows the state's design with its name, the year it joined the Union or ratified the Constitution, the year of issue and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The mint mark is to the right of Washington's ponytail.

What the value bands mean

  • Face value: worth its face in worn condition; only uncirculated coins and varieties carry a premium.
  • Small premium: sells for a little over face or metal value even when worn.
  • Collector premium: scarcer than usual, so worn coins sell well above face or metal value.
  • Significant rarity: a key date, valuable in any condition and often faked.

Bands describe a coin in ordinary circulated condition. An uncirculated coin with full original luster sits a band or more higher. Recognized varieties can be worth far more than the date itself.

Frequently asked questions

Which State quarters are worth the most?

By mintage, the scarcest circulation issues are the 2008-D Oklahoma Quarter (194,600,000), 2004-P Iowa Quarter (213,800,000), 2002-P Ohio Quarter (217,200,000). Varieties and top-grade coins of common dates can also be valuable.

Are State quarters silver?

No. 1999 to 2008: copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel.

Why does this chart show bands instead of prices?

Prices change with the market and with each coin's grade, so any printed price goes out of date. A value band tells you which coins are worth a closer look; for a current price, check recent sold results for certified coins in the same grade.
