What is a 2022-D Dr. Sally Ride Quarter worth?
A worn 2022-D Dr. Sally Ride is a spender: face value. A bright uncirculated one, or one with a known error, is worth setting aside.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error

Quick answers
- Is the 2022-D Dr. Sally Ride Quarter rare?
- No. 278 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
- Is the 2022-D Dr. Sally Ride Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2022 American Women Quarter?
- On the obverse (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2022-D Dr. Sally Ride Quarter coins were made?
- 278,000,000.
What to check on your 2022-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2022-P (275 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2022-S Dr. Sally Ride Quarter Proof (304,120 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
With 278 million made, the 2022-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2022-D Dr. Sally Ride
Denver made 278,000,000 of the Dr. Sally Ride quarter. Among the 5 designs of 2022 it was the second largest Denver run, between Maya Angelou (258 million) and Wilma Mankiller (297 million).
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (275 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it's one of the most plentiful Denver designs.

The American Women quarters program began, alongside a new obverse portrait of Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser.
How to recognize it
The Dr. Sally Ride design
Dr. Sally Ride became the first American woman in space on June 18, 1983, flying aboard the shuttle Challenger on mission STS-7. A physicist by training, she flew again in 1984 and later served on the panels investigating both the Challenger and Columbia accidents. She co-founded Sally Ride Science to encourage young people, especially girls, to study science. The reverse shows Ride beside a shuttle window with Earth visible beyond, inspired by her memory of watching Earth whenever she was not working. Elana Hagler designed it.
The American Women Quarter design
The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
