What is a 2022-D Maya Angelou Quarter worth?
A worn 2022-D Maya Angelou is a spender: face value. A bright uncirculated one, or one with a known error, is worth setting aside.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error

Quick answers
- Is the 2022-D Maya Angelou Quarter rare?
- Not by date: 258 million were struck. A sharp uncirculated coin or a known variety is what makes one special.
- Is the 2022-D Maya Angelou Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2022 American Women Quarter?
- On the obverse (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2022-D Maya Angelou Quarter coins were made?
- 258,200,000.
What to check on your 2022-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2022-P (238 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2022-S Maya Angelou Quarter Proof (303,520 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
With 258 million made, the 2022-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2022-D Maya Angelou
Denver made 258,200,000 of the Maya Angelou quarter. Among the 5 designs of 2022 it was the middle Denver run, between Anna May Wong (241 million) and Dr. Sally Ride (278 million).
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (238 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 15th of 20 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Althea Gibson at 32 million.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2022
The American Women quarters program began, alongside a new obverse portrait of Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser.
How to recognize it
The Maya Angelou design
Maya Angelou (1928 to 2014) was a poet, memoirist, performer and civil rights activist. Her 1969 autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings brought her international recognition. She read her poem On the Pulse of Morning at the 1993 presidential inauguration and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. The reverse shows her with arms uplifted before a bird in flight and a rising sun, images drawn from her poetry. Emily Damstra designed it and Craig A. Campbell sculpted it.
The American Women Quarter design
The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
