What is a 2023-D Maria Tallchief Quarter worth?
In circulated condition it's worth face value. Only uncirculated coins with full original luster, or a recognized variety, carry a premium.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error

Quick answers
- Is the 2023-D Maria Tallchief Quarter rare?
- Not by date: 185 million were struck. A sharp uncirculated coin or a known variety is what makes one special.
- Is the 2023-D Maria Tallchief Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2023 American Women Quarter?
- On the obverse (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2023-D Maria Tallchief Quarter coins were made?
- 184,800,000.
What to check on your 2023-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2023-P (186 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2023-S Maria Tallchief Quarter Proof (502,560 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
With 185 million made, the 2023-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2023-D Maria Tallchief
Denver made 184,800,000 of the Maria Tallchief quarter. Among the 5 designs of 2023 it was the second smallest Denver run, between Jovita Idar (185 million) and Eleanor Roosevelt (272 million).
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (186 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 10th of 20 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Althea Gibson at 32 million.
How to recognize it
The Maria Tallchief design
Maria Tallchief (1925 to 2013), a member of the Osage Nation from Oklahoma, is regarded as America's first major prima ballerina. She became a leading dancer with what became the New York City Ballet, winning fame in George Balanchine's The Firebird in 1949. She received Kennedy Center Honors in 1996. The reverse shows her spotlit in a balletic pose, with her Osage name, meaning Two Standards, written in Osage orthography. Benjamin Sowards designed it and Joseph Menna sculpted it.
The American Women Quarter design
The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
