What is a 2023-P Jovita Idar Quarter worth?

In circulated condition it's worth face value. Only uncirculated coins with full original luster, or a recognized variety, carry a premium.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error

What to check on your 2023-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2023-D (185 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2023-S Jovita Idar Quarter Proof (503,920 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.

With 191 million made, the 2023-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2023-P Jovita Idar

Philadelphia made 190,600,000 of the Jovita Idar quarter. Among the 5 designs of 2023 it was the second smallest Philadelphia run, between Maria Tallchief (186 million) and Eleanor Roosevelt (284 million).

Denver struck a similar number of the same design (185 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.

Across the whole program it sits 10th of 20 Philadelphia designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Althea Gibson at 35 million.

How to recognize it

The Jovita Idar design

Jovita Idar (1885 to 1946) was a journalist, teacher, nurse and activist from Laredo, Texas, who fought for the rights of Mexican Americans. She wrote for her family's newspaper La Crónica and in 1911 helped found La Liga Femenil Mexicanista, which offered free education to Mexican American children. During the Mexican Revolution she served as a nurse with La Cruz Blanca. The reverse shows her with clasped hands, her figure filled with words naming her causes and the newspapers she wrote for. John P. McGraw designed and sculpted it.

The American Women Quarter design

The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
