Quick answers
- Is the 2024-D Patsy Mink Quarter rare?
- No. 187 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
- Is the 2024-D Patsy Mink Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2024 American Women Quarter?
- On the obverse (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2024-D Patsy Mink Quarter coins were made?
- 187,200,000.
What to check on your 2024-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2024-P (210 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2024-S Patsy Mink Quarter Proof (471,720 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
With 187 million made, the 2024-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2024-D Patsy Mink
Denver made 187,200,000 of the Patsy Mink quarter. That was the biggest Denver run of the 5 designs issued in 2024; Celia Cruz had the smallest at 156 million.
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (210 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 12th of 20 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Althea Gibson at 32 million.
How to recognize it
The Patsy Mink design
Patsy Takemoto Mink (1927 to 2002) of Hawaii became the first woman of color elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, taking office in 1965. She co-authored Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which bars sex discrimination in federally funded education programs. After her death the law was renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act. The reverse shows her holding Title IX in front of the south wing of the Capitol, wearing a lei for her home state, with the inscription EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IN EDUCATION.
The American Women Quarter design
The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
