What is a 2024-D Zitkala-Ša Quarter worth?
In circulated condition it's worth face value. Only uncirculated coins with full original luster, or a recognized variety, carry a premium.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error

Quick answers
- Is the 2024-D Zitkala-Ša Quarter rare?
- No. 170 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
- Is the 2024-D Zitkala-Ša Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2024 American Women Quarter?
- On the obverse (P, D or S). On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
- How many 2024-D Zitkala-Ša Quarter coins were made?
- 170,200,000.
What to check on your 2024-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2024-P (153 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2024-S Zitkala-Ša Quarter Proof (430,280 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Modern quarters are graded on luster, strike and marks. Proofs are judged on cameo contrast.
With 170 million made, the 2024-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2024-D Zitkala-Ša
Denver made 170,200,000 of the Zitkala-Ša quarter. Among the 5 designs of 2024 it was the middle Denver run, between Dr. Mary Edwards Walker (159 million) and Dr. Pauli Murray (186 million).
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (153 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it sits 8th of 20 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Althea Gibson at 32 million.
How to recognize it
The Zitkala-Ša design
Zitkala-Ša (1876 to 1938), whose name means Red Bird, was a Yankton Dakota writer, composer, educator and activist. Her stories and essays, collected in American Indian Stories in 1921, described Native life and boarding school experiences. She co-wrote The Sun Dance Opera, first performed in 1913. In 1926 she co-founded the National Council of American Indians to press for citizenship and voting rights. The reverse shows her in Yankton Sioux dress holding a book, with a stylized sun, a cardinal and a diamond pattern behind her.
The American Women Quarter design
The obverse shows a new portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, originally submitted in the 1931 design competition. Each reverse honors a woman who shaped American history, with her name and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and QUARTER DOLLAR. Five honorees were issued each year from 2022 to 2025.
