What is a 2014-D Shenandoah Quarter worth?

In circulated condition it's worth face value. Only uncirculated coins with full original luster, or a recognized variety, carry a premium.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with full original luster
  • A die variety or minting error

Quick answers

Is the 2014-D Shenandoah Quarter rare?
No. 198 million were made, a typical run for the series. Condition and varieties decide its value, not the date.
Is the 2014-D Shenandoah Quarter silver?
No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
Where is the mint mark on a 2014 America the Beautiful Quarter?
On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is D, for Denver.
How many 2014-D Shenandoah Quarter coins were made?
197,800,000.

What to check on your 2014-D

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2014-P (113 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2014-S Shenandoah Quarter Proof (828,186 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.

With 198 million made, the 2014-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2014-D Shenandoah

Denver made 197,800,000 of the Shenandoah coin. Among the 5 designs of 2014 it was the second largest Denver run, between Great Sand Dunes (172 million) and Arches (251 million).

Philadelphia struck fewer of the same design (113 million), which makes the 2014-P the scarcer of the pair.

Across the whole program it sits 36th of 56 Denver designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Acadia at 22 million.

How to recognize it

The Shenandoah design

Virginia's Shenandoah National Park is the subject of the second 2014 quarter, which shows a day hiker taking in the view from the summit of Little Stony Man. The park stretches along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with Skyline Drive running its full length. Established in 1935, it was assembled largely from private land. Many former farm fields have since returned to forest. Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse.

The America the Beautiful Quarter design

Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
