Quick answers

Is the 2014-P Great Smoky Mountains Quarter rare?
Not by date: 73 million were struck. A sharp uncirculated coin or a known variety is what makes one special.
Is the 2014-P Great Smoky Mountains Quarter silver?
No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
Where is the mint mark on a 2014 America the Beautiful Quarter?

What to check on your 2014-P

  • Make sure the mint mark really is a P. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2014-D (99 million made).
  • Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2014-S Great Smoky Mountains Quarter Proof (828,186 made) is the one to compare with.
  • A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
  • Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.

With 73 million made, the 2014-P still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.

The story of the 2014-P Great Smoky Mountains

Philadelphia made 73,200,000 of the Great Smoky Mountains coin. That was the smallest Philadelphia run of the 5 designs issued in 2014, so it's the one from that year you're least likely to find in change.

Denver struck more of the same design, 99 million, so the 2014-P is the scarcer of the pair by about 26 percent.

Across the whole program it sits 15th of 56 Philadelphia designs by mintage, where the scarcest is Chaco Culture at 22 million.

How to recognize it

The Great Smoky Mountains design

Tennessee's quarter, first of 2014, honors Great Smoky Mountains National Park with a historic log cabin set in the forest and a hawk circling overhead. The cabin recalls the mountain families who farmed these valleys before the park was established in the 1930s. Straddling the Tennessee and North Carolina border, the park preserves many historic log buildings and is known for its exceptional variety of plant and animal life. Chris Costello designed the reverse and Renata Gordon sculpted it.

The America the Beautiful Quarter design

Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
