What to check on your 2020-D
- Make sure the mint mark really is a D. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2020-W (2 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2020-S Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Quarter Proof (528,900 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
With 346 million made, the 2020-D still turns up in everyday change. Keep yours only if it looks uncirculated or shows a variety; otherwise it's worth face value.
The story of the 2020-D Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller
Denver made 345,800,000 of the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller coin. Among the 5 designs of 2020 it was the second largest Denver run, between National Park (212 million) and Salt River Bay (515 million).
Philadelphia struck a similar number of the same design (305 million), so neither mint's version is much harder to find.
Across the whole program it's one of the most plentiful Denver designs.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2020
West Point again struck quarters with a W mint mark for circulation, this time on all five 2020 designs.
How to recognize it
The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller design
Vermont's Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, the fourth design of 2020, shows a young girl finishing the planting of a Norway spruce seedling near an established tree. The park in Woodstock tells the story of conservation and land stewardship. It is named for George Perkins Marsh, author of Man and Nature; Frederick Billings, who reforested the estate; and Laurance and Mary Rockefeller, who gave it to the nation. Donna Weaver designed the reverse, which Michael Gaudioso sculpted.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
