What is a 2020-W Salt River Bay Quarter worth?
It's scarcer than a typical date, so even circulated examples sell above face. The best uncirculated coins are where the money is.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with full original luster
- A die variety or minting error
- Certification by PCGS or NGC, which buyers expect for scarce dates

Quick answers
- Is the 2020-W Salt River Bay Quarter rare?
- Somewhat. 2,000,000 were made, fewer than most dates, so collectors treat it as a semi-key.
- Is the 2020-W Salt River Bay Quarter silver?
- No. It's copper core clad in 75% copper / 25% nickel. Quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
- Where is the mint mark on a 2020 America the Beautiful Quarter?
- On the obverse, to the right of Washington's ribbon. "W" quarters were struck in 2019 and 2020 and released into circulation in small numbers. On this coin the mark is W, for West Point.
- How many 2020-W Salt River Bay Quarter coins were made?
- 2,000,000.
What to check on your 2020-W
- Make sure the mint mark really is a W. A worn or filled mark can be misread. It's what separates your coin from the 2020-D (515 million made).
- Proof or circulation strike? A proof has mirror-like fields and frosted design details and was sold to collectors, not released in change. The 2020-S Salt River Bay Quarter Proof (528,900 made) is the one to compare with.
- A face that's fully copper colored could be a missing clad layer error. Patchy discoloration is usually damage.
- Judge the grade under good light. Look for luster and freedom from bag marks. "W" quarters in circulation are worth a premium even in average condition.
The story of the 2020-W Salt River Bay
West Point made 2,000,000 of the Salt River Bay coin. Among the 5 designs of 2020 it was the middle West Point run, between Weir Farm (2 million) and Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller (2 million).
Philadelphia struck more of the same design, 578 million, so the 2020-W is the scarcer of the pair by about 100 percent.
Across the whole program it's one of the most plentiful West Point designs.
Elsewhere in US coinage in 2020
West Point again struck quarters with a W mint mark for circulation, this time on all five 2020 designs.
How to recognize it
The Salt River Bay design
The U.S. Virgin Islands are represented on the third 2020 quarter by Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve on St. Croix. The reverse shows a young red mangrove tree in an early stage of its life cycle, highlighting the bay's mangrove forests. In 1493 members of Columbus's second expedition landed here and clashed with the island's Indigenous inhabitants. The park protects both that history and important coastal habitat. Richard Masters designed the reverse and Joseph Menna sculpted it.
The America the Beautiful Quarter design
Each reverse shows a national park or other national site, one for every state, the District of Columbia and five territories, with the site's name, its state and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Five designs were issued each year from 2010 to 2020, followed by a final design for the Tuskegee Airmen in 2021. The obverse uses a restored, more detailed version of Flanagan's original Washington portrait.
