What is a 2021 Charles Babbage 50p worth?

This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 50 pence; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.

What would make yours worth more:

  • Uncirculated condition with no scratches or contact marks
  • Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
  • A genuine mint error, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2021 Charles Babbage 50p was made

Charles Babbage, born in London in 1791, was a mathematician and inventor often called a father of the computer. He designed the Difference Engine, a machine to calculate and print mathematical tables. Later came the Analytical Engine, a far more ambitious design that could in principle be programmed. Ada Lovelace wrote notes on the Analytical Engine that are often seen as the first published computer program. Babbage held the Lucasian chair of mathematics at Cambridge and died in 1871.

For the 150th anniversary of his death, the Royal Mint added Babbage to its Innovation in Science series, which had already honored Stephen Hawking, Rosalind Franklin and John Logie Baird. Like the others, it was sold as a brilliant uncirculated coin in packs and not released into circulation. If you find one in your change, someone opened a pack and spent it. It is legal tender at 50p, but it was never distributed through banks, so loose examples are scarce in everyday use. Few people realize it exists until one turns up.

How to recognize it

Nigel Tudman and Jas Bhamra are credited with the design, which carries Babbage's name as its key inscription. As part of the Innovation in Science series, it links his calculating engines to the digital age. The obverse has Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II above the 2021 date. Three Innovation in Science coins share that date, so the name is the easiest identifier: the Baird coin shows radiating transmission lines and the Insulin coin shows crystals and a formula. If your coin shows the name Charles Babbage with a 2021 date, it belongs to this series. It is struck on the standard seven-sided cupronickel blank with a plain edge, 27.3 millimeters across.

The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.

2021 Charles Babbage 50p by the numbers

No circulation mintage exists for the 2021 Charles Babbage 50p because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only 50p coins dated 2021 were John Logie Baird, Decimalisation, Dinosauria, Team GB, Winnie the Pooh and Friends, Winnie the Pooh: Owl, Insulin, The Snowman and Winnie the Pooh: Tigger.

No commemorative 50p dated 2021 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.

What to check on your 2021 Charles Babbage 50p

  • Confirm the design. The reverse should match the Charles Babbage described above and carry the date 2021; similar designs from other years are a common mix-up.
  • Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
  • Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
  • Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.

The Babbage coin is often bought with the other Innovation in Science coins to complete the five-coin series. It also appeals to people who work in computing or programming, many of whom know Babbage's name from the history of their field. With no circulation mintage, any example in change has been freed from a pack by its owner. Kept sealed, it carries a collector premium. A coin from change usually shows wear on the lettering and fine details, leaving it near face value or a small premium. Pack coins have unbroken luster with sharp edges on the letters; a spent coin is duller with nicks on the rim.
