What is a 2021 Insulin 50p worth?
This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 50 pence; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with no scratches or contact marks
- Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
- A genuine mint error, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2021 Insulin 50p was made
Insulin was discovered in 1921 at the University of Toronto by Frederick Banting and Charles Best, working with John Macleod and James Collip. Within months it was being used to treat people with type 1 diabetes, a condition that had until then been fatal. Banting and Macleod shared the 1923 Nobel Prize for the discovery. British scientists then made major contributions: Frederick Sanger worked out insulin's amino acid sequence and Dorothy Hodgkin later determined its three-dimensional structure. Both won Nobel Prizes in chemistry, giving the story a strong British thread.
For the centenary of the discovery, the Royal Mint issued an Insulin 50p in its Innovation in Science series, which also honored Stephen Hawking, Rosalind Franklin, John Logie Baird and Charles Babbage. Collectors could buy it in brilliant uncirculated packs, but it was never released into circulation. Finding one in change means someone opened a pack and spent the coin. It is legal tender at 50p, but sightings in tills are rare because the banks never had any to give out.
How to recognize it
Iris De La Torre designed the reverse, which shows insulin crystals together with the hormone's chemical formula. The result has a scientific look, with geometric crystals and lines of chemical symbols. Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the 2021 date are on the obverse. Among the three Innovation in Science coins dated 2021, the crystals and formula identify this one: the Baird coin has radiating lines and milestones, while the Babbage coin is built around his name. The formula's small letters and numbers are the finest detail on the coin, so they make the best check on condition. It is struck on the normal seven-sided cupronickel blank and has a plain edge.
The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.
2021 Insulin 50p by the numbers
No circulation mintage exists for the 2021 Insulin 50p because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only 50p coins dated 2021 were John Logie Baird, Decimalisation, Dinosauria, Team GB, Winnie the Pooh and Friends, Charles Babbage, Winnie the Pooh: Owl, The Snowman and Winnie the Pooh: Tigger.
No commemorative 50p dated 2021 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.
What to check on your 2021 Insulin 50p
- Confirm the design. The reverse should match the Insulin described above and carry the date 2021; similar designs from other years are a common mix-up.
- Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
- Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
- Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.
The Insulin coin completes the five-coin Innovation in Science series. It also appeals to medical professionals and people living with diabetes. With no circulation mintage, it only reaches change when someone breaks open a pack. In its pack it carries a collector premium. A coin from change usually shows wear on the formula's fine lettering and scratches across the crystals, leaving it near face value or a small premium. That small lettering is the best condition test: sharp on a pack coin, blurred on one that has been handled.
