What is a 2021 Decimalisation 50p worth?
This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 50 pence; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with no scratches or contact marks
- Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
- A genuine mint error, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2021 Decimalisation 50p was made
On 15 February 1971, known as Decimal Day, Britain changed its money. The old system of 12 pence to the shilling and 20 shillings to the pound gave way to a pound of 100 new pence. Some decimal coins were introduced early to ease the change, including the 50p, which arrived in 1969. Decimal Day was when banks and shops switched over and the old pennies, threepences and sixpences started to disappear from everyday use. For people who grew up with the old money it was a big adjustment.
The Royal Mint marked the 50th anniversary of decimalization with this 50p in 2021. It was a fitting choice, since the 50p was one of the coins that made the change possible. The coin was sold as a brilliant uncirculated coin in packs and was not released into circulation. Should you find one in your change, it came from a pack that was opened and spent. It is legal tender at 50p, though you're far more likely to meet it in a collection than at a till, since it was never sent out through banks.
How to recognize it
Dominique Evans designed the reverse, which shows a range of the pre-decimal coins that Decimal Day swept away. They sit inside the seven-sided outline of a 50p, along with the words "1971 DECIMAL DAY". On the obverse you'll find Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the 2021 date. Because the reverse is crowded with small coin images, wear shows quickly. No other 50p shows a group of old coins inside a 50p outline, so identification is easy. The edge is plain and the coin weighs 8 grams. Pick out the individual old coins under a magnifier; on a worn example they merge into one another quickly.
The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.
2021 Decimalisation 50p by the numbers
No circulation mintage exists for the 2021 Decimalisation 50p because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only 50p coins dated 2021 were John Logie Baird, Dinosauria, Team GB, Winnie the Pooh and Friends, Charles Babbage, Winnie the Pooh: Owl, Insulin, The Snowman and Winnie the Pooh: Tigger.
No commemorative 50p dated 2021 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.
What to check on your 2021 Decimalisation 50p
- Confirm the design. The reverse should match the Decimalisation described above and carry the date 2021; similar designs from other years are a common mix-up.
- Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
- Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
- Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.
The decimal anniversary coin appeals to people who remember the old money as well as to collectors. It had no circulation mintage, so loose examples come only from spent packs. A pack that has never been opened carries a collector premium. A coin from change usually shows rubbing over the tiny pre-decimal coins, which reduces it to face value or a small premium. The small coins are the best place to check: on a pack coin their outlines and details are sharp, but on a spent coin the edges blur together and the open areas pick up scratches.
