What is a 2021 Snowman 50p worth?
This design was never released into circulation. The Royal Mint sold it in brilliant uncirculated packs and annual sets, so almost every example is a collector piece. One found in change is still legal tender at 50 pence; out of its pack it brings a small premium at most, while a coin still sealed in its original packaging is what collectors want.
What would make yours worth more:
- Uncirculated condition with no scratches or contact marks
- Original Royal Mint pack or presentation folder
- A genuine mint error, confirmed by an expert

Why the 2021 Snowman 50p was made
The 2021 coin was the fourth Snowman 50p in four years. It went back to the start of Raymond Briggs's story, where a boy rushes outside after a snowfall and builds the snowman that will later come to life. In the book, published in 1978 without any words, the building scene sets up everything that follows. The 1982 film, with James as the boy, does the same. Finishing the face is the moment the snowman becomes a character, so it suited a coin well.
As with the earlier coins, the 2021 design was sold only as a brilliant uncirculated coin in a festive pack and was not released to the banks for circulation. A 2021 Snowman 50p in your change means someone opened a pack and spent it. It is legal tender at 50p and shops will accept it, but it is one of those coins most people only ever see in a collection. No pack mintage has been given for this year, so it cannot be ranked against the 2018 coin's published figure.
How to recognize it
Robin Shaw, who also designed the 2020 coin, created this reverse showing James drawing the mouth on the Snowman. The 2021 date sits on the obverse with Jody Clark's portrait of the queen. The scene is the giveaway: the 2018 coin shows the pair flying, the 2019 coin shows them standing together in the snow and the 2020 coin shows an embrace. Only the 2021 coin shows the building scene. James's hand reaching up to the face is the detail to look for. It is struck in cupronickel on the standard seven-sided 50p blank, weighs 8 grams and has a plain edge.
The other side carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015 and the last of her reign.
2021 Snowman 50p by the numbers
No circulation mintage exists for the 2021 Snowman 50p because none were released to banks. The Royal Mint's other collector-only 50p coins dated 2021 were John Logie Baird, Decimalisation, Dinosauria, Team GB, Winnie the Pooh and Friends, Charles Babbage, Winnie the Pooh: Owl, Insulin and Winnie the Pooh: Tigger.
No commemorative 50p dated 2021 was released for circulation, which is why so many people hunting change for new designs never see this one.
What to check on your 2021 Snowman 50p
- Confirm the design. The reverse should match the The Snowman described above and carry the date 2021; similar designs from other years are a common mix-up.
- Weigh it if you can: a genuine 27.3 mm 50p weighs 8.0 g. Copies are often light, slightly soft in detail or the wrong color.
- Ignore painted or colored versions sold online as special editions. Color added after the coin left the Mint does not make it a Royal Mint issue and does not add collector value.
- Look at the surfaces under a bright light. Coins straight from a pack have unbroken luster; change-worn coins show scuffs on the high points of the portrait and design.
The 2021 coin completes the 2018 to 2021 Snowman run, so collectors building that set need it. With no circulation mintage, a loose one can only be a pack coin that was spent. A sealed, clean pack carries a collector premium. A coin from change usually shows wear on James's face and hand and on the Snowman's body, leaving it near face value or a small premium. Pack coins show full luster with crisp outlines; spent coins look dull with nicks on the rim and scratches across the flat areas.
